Terry McNamara

Terry McNamara

A native of Del Norte County, Terry was raised on the family ranch, graduated from Del Norte High School and studied teaching at Santa Rosa Junior College and Humboldt State University. He taught at Sunset High School in Arcata, CA and Del Norte High School. A former Staff Sergeant and Platoon Leader with the Army National Guard, Terry later served as a Reserve Deputy with the Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office.

In 1979, Terry formed the Search and Rescue division of the County Sheriff’s Office, where he served as a volunteer for 39 years, leading numerous search and rescue efforts for residents and visitors of Del Norte County. Terry is a Certified Advanced Rope Rescue instructor, having taught classes at several national parks, all local fire departments, and the County Search and Rescue team.

Terry’s field treatment for patients during search and rescue operations was a natural fit for later community healthcare service. He was elected to the Del Norte Healthcare District in 1998 and chaired the District during construction of the Del Norte Wellness Center, the county’s largest medical clinic.

Terry continues to volunteer as the Work Coordinator for the St. George Reef Lighthouse Society, where he and his wife Fran have served for nearly 30 years to help restore the historic lighthouse. Terry has kept his ranching background. He and Fran continue to operate and reside at Crescent City’s only working cattle ranch.
